Related Minors

Our faculty contribute to several related minors offered at the University of Mississippi. Students majoring in Sociology or Anthropology who are interested in focusing on a specific area should consider adding one of these minors to their degree program. African American Studies
The minor in African American studies consists of 18 semester hours, including AAS 201 and 202, 6 credit hours from a list of African and African American history courses, and 6 credit hours from a list of African and African American political and social institutions courses and culture courses.

Environmental Studies
A minor in environmental studies is designed to introduce students to an interdisciplinary approach to environmental concerns, including: 1) a study of human/environmental interactions from the viewpoint of the social sciences; 2) a reflection on environmental themes in the arts and humanities; 3) the scientific foundations of environmental thought.

Gender Studies
The Isom Center offers a Gender Studies Minor, an interdisciplinary course of study that will help students understand how and why notions of “masculinity” and “femininity” have changed at different times and in different cultures. Analysis of gender also includes attention to other social categories, such as race, ethnicity, class, nationality, ability, age, and sexual orientation. Students can select from a variety of cross-listed courses taught by some of the best and most innovative teachers from the departments of African-American Studies, Classics, English, History, Modern Languages, Political Science, Philosophy & Religion, Psychology, Sociology & Anthropology, and Southern Studies. A minor with an emphasis in Sexuality & Queer Studies is also available.

International Studies
A minor in international studies consists of 18 hours, including Pol 102 or Inst 101 and 15 hours of 300-level (or higher) course work selected from Inst-designated courses.

Society & Health
The minor in society and health focuses on the socioeconomic, cultural, and psychological factors associated with human health at multiple levels of society, coupled with their implications for ethical health care practice and policy. Students will develop an interdisciplinary social science and humanities-based approach to understanding health and an appreciation for the value of interprofessional, team-based problem-solving to improve health care and health outcomes.

Southern Studies
A minor in Southern studies consists of S St 101, 102, 401, and 402. Six additional hours must be selected from the following courses: African American studies (AAS 201, 202, 307, 310, 325, 326, 329, 337, 420, 504, 593); art (AH 366, 369, 386); economics (Econ 422); English (Eng 357, 361, 362, 354, 374, 460, 414, 514); history (His 307, 308, 330, 333, 334, 335, 336, 337); music (Mus 321, 517, 518); political science (Pol 317, 318); philosophy and religion (Rel 303, 503); sociology and anthropology (Soc 334, 413, Anth 309, 334, 337); and Southern studies (S St 303, 334, 406, 534, 598).
